Bring Me My Coat

When Being Loved Matters More Than Being Admired

Near the end of Paul’s life, the great apostle made a remarkably ordinary request: he wanted Timothy to come—and to bring the cloak he had left at Troas. That simple request reveals something easy to overlook. A person can be respected, accomplished, spiritually strong, and deeply admired while still needing warmth, companionship, practical help, and the assurance that someone cares.

Bring Me My Coat explores the difference between admiration and affection, the loneliness that can accompany strength and responsibility, the difficulty of receiving care after a lifetime of giving it, and the value of ordinary acts of compassion when we cannot change someone’s larger circumstances.

The central message is simple: people need more than recognition for what they accomplish. Sometimes what matters most is knowing that someone sees the person behind the ministry, role, or reputation—and cares enough to bring the coat.
